Albert Einstein helped persuade President Roosevelt to build the first atomic bomb. But later, in the 1950's, the physicist warned that if a Third World War was fought with the new weapons, there'd be nothing left on earth to fight a Fourth war with but sticks and stones. And there was another threat: accidents. Mishaps and blunders with nuclear weapons have proven much more difficult to avoid than all out war. A new terminology was needed, a way to describe accidents in which nuclear weapons are lost or destroyed - or worse. These incidents became known as "Broken Arrows."
